BOOKSHOPS: Discover Irish Children's Books Treasure Hunt
Dear Bookseller,
We are delighted to announce our new Discover Irish Children’s Books promotion for Irish Book Week 2024 (19th to 26th October). Here you will find a Treasure Hunt to help the children of your shop to ‘Discover’ Irish children’s books.
There are two sheets, one aimed at children age 3+ and one at age 8+. The sheet for age 3+ highlights animals and objects that may be found in an Irish children’s picture book or on the cover. The sheet for age 8+ invites the children to write in the books that best fit the prompt’s description.
We would be delighted if you would distribute the Treasure Hunt prompts to customers; explain the goal; and, if asked, help them identify books by Irish authors. (We define Irish authors as authors from or resident on the island of Ireland).
The aim of this Treasure Hunt is to promote Irish children’s books, particularly among young customers and their parents and guardians. The hope is that the Treasure Hunts will foster an interest and familiarity with contemporary Irish children’s books and will highlight them for children or adults who may previously have been unaware of new Irish titles.
The Discover Irish Children’s Books team is made up of authors, illustrators, librarians and booksellers, so we understand the day-to-day pressure you may be under and we don’t want to add to that. With that in mind we are proposing the following ways to use the posters.
- Set aside a few minutes in the day to do the hunt yourselves and post some of your results on social media, using the hashtags, #DiscoverIrishKidsBooks or #LeabhairÉireannachaDoPháistíAbú.
- If you have a regular storytime event or book club event, use that event to have children do the treasure hunt as one big group. The person running the event can call out the prompt and the children find the relevant (Irish) children’s book to go with it.
- Give the sheet to parents and grandparents etc when browsing, suggest that if they like they could do it with their kids over multiple visits to your shop.
